Wales Our history in Wales Business historian Professor Leslie Hannah talks about Barclays’ long history and its role in society during this time. Not too far away, the bank of Lock, Hulm and Co was established in Pembroke in , and had also opened a branch in Tenby before it was taken over by the Bank of Wales in The Bank of Wales had only been founded in in Swansea, but quickly set about opening branches across South Wales — 11 within two years. However, within three years, it had been taken over itself — it became part of the Provincial Banking Corporation in It had branches scattered across the south east and east of England, in addition to those it had acquired in Wales. Although it closed a small number of Welsh branches in , the Bank did remain committed to Wales, opening branches in Llanelli, Merthyr Tydfil and Tredegar in By , the London and Provincial had 60 branches and sub-branches in Wales. Although these were predominantly in South Wales, there had been some movement north, with a branch in Ruthin in , Rhyl in , and Wrexham in This bank then merged with Barclays later that same year. Although this merger brought Barclays a significant influx of Welsh branches, it was not their first foray into the Principality.

These meetings are free to attend for anyone with an interested in exploring Cyber Security. Tuesday 16th January Time: Unfortunately, our fixation with the computers, the software, the Internet, the dark web and the gadgets that cyber criminals use tends to draw our focus of attention away from the reality of what the cybercriminal is actually doing. In the aftermath of a cyberattack, we get caught up in the technological wizardry that made the attack possible and the need to find a computer-based solution to the hack but there is a lot more to fighting cyber criminals than this.

The Unit has steadily grown over the years and we have seen new faces popping up at the Cluster – but what exactly do they do? The Unit will be hosting the January meeting of the Cluster near to their HQ in Bridgend and will provide a deeper dive into the strategies and tactics being employed in the fight against cyber crime and discuss how we, as businesses and cyber experts, can work more closely with them in this ongoing battle. The Hillary Rodham Clinton School of Law sponsored our meeting which also marked the launch of a new member of the Cyber Wales Ecosystem – the IP Cluster – being run in conjunction with IP Wales, an award winning business support initiative operating out of the School.

IP Wales recognises that cybercriminals are increasingly coming to recognise the value of confidential data held by Welsh SMEs, be it sensitive information about the business operation or customer information. This facility will act as a beacon for research collaborations and will look to attract leading researchers to Wales and make a solid contribution to computational cyber security.

There would have been be a tour of the Campus to showcase these brand new facilities but ubfortunately, the weather got in the way. Being the Christmas meeting, there was an appetite for some mince pies and Cluster member, Dr Kerry Beynon of Acuity Legal, had very kindly sponsored a wonderful Xmas Buffet which provided the ideal gathering place to chat and network before and after the meeting itself. This renovated railway site has seen huge crowds enjoying music concerts and gigs, martial arts training and demonstrations, gatherings of business groups such as Digital Tuesdays and has even hosted inward trade delegations from European countries in conjunction with Welsh Government and the Department for International Trade.

Perhaps one of it’s biggest events was this year’s Digital Festival which saw vendors exhibiting in transport containers and keynote talks on boats on the river as well as a packed set of talks in the rabbit warren that is the Tramshed and we were lucky enough to sample their facilities and hospitality for our Cluster meeting. The guest speaker for the meeting was also a bit of an enigma – Thales.

Contemporary photographers documented this period of great social and economic change using rudimentary equipment with tremendous skill and artistry. Their portrayals of welsh rural and urban life, including street scenes, schools, churches, railways, collieries, dockyards etc form the basis of the Reflective Images Collection. In many cases street names change, spellings change but in some cases it is just human error, which is all part of the history of the original.

Whilst we appreciate it is always difficult to judge quality over the internet, you are more than welcome to come talk to me and see for yourself at many of the places we exhibit at during the year. The full list of venues can be found below. We are pleased to announce that miniature images of all prints are now available to be seen on this site.

It follows confirmation last week that the UK Government will not use the Barnett formula to define the allocation of Defra funding beyond the current Parliament. UK environment secretary Michael Gove today announced that an independent advisory panel will carry out a review lasting up to six months before recommending how the funding should be split. Does michaelgove think farmers should be paid less for the food they produce? While they can influence funding allocations, they cannot base their recommendations on previous distributions of CAP money within the UK. Neither can they pre-empt decisions to be made on overall farm funding arrangements beyond Read More ‘1, tree-covered farms is the real reason for scrapping subsidies in Wales’ Welsh Secretary Alun Cairns said the decision to jettison a Barnett model for agri funding, was a boost for Welsh producers.

This means Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland will not be allocated funding according to population size, which are in each case are much smaller than in England.

However, what little remains is not without interest, and the best place from which to get an impression of its original grandeur is half-way across the adjacent bridge, from where its position right on the bank of the river Usk can best be appreciated. The projecting central tower with its water-gate or dock beneath is the dominant feature. Flanking it are two octagonal towers with prominent spur buttresses.

Newport Castle , on the west bank of the River Usk Bronze Age fishermen settled around the fertile estuary of the River Usk and later the Celtic Silures built hillforts overlooking it. In AD 75, on the very edge of their empire, the Roman legions built a Roman fort at Caerleon to defend the river crossing. According to legend, in the late 5th century Saint Woolos church was founded by Saint Gwynllyw , the patron saint of Newport and King of Gwynllwg.

The church was certainly in existence by the 9th century and today has become Newport Cathedral , the seat of the Bishop of Monmouth. The Normans arrived from around — to build the first Newport Castle and river crossing downstream from Caerleon and the first Norman Lord of Newport was Robert Fitzhamon. The settlement of ‘Newport’ is first mentioned as novo burgus established by Robert, Earl of Gloucester in The city can sometimes be found labelled as Newport-on-Usk on old maps.
